Focusing
Update: I've been able to update my Flickr gadgets and there are new versions finally available! Visit Instant Flickr to install the latest Flickr gadget.
Do you ever feel like you're running around like a chicken with its head cut off? Well, I don't really know what that feels like (gratefully), but I think you get the point.
I've been feeling that a bit lately with my Google modules, so I've decided to simplify. I've been having some trouble lately with my Flickr modules (and that makes me sad), but I've had to make a choice. My Flickr modules aren't unique (there are a lot of others here) and I've had some trouble with the Flickr API service lately, so I've decided to stop supporting them. I've had just too many support-related emails to manage. The good news in this is that it allows me focus on the two modules that really are unique and interesting so that I can improve them. So, I apologize if you're a big fan of my Flickr modules (and thanks!), but I'm going to focus on my Traffic module and my Netflix module to make them better, faster and stronger (we have the technology).
PS. I can't tell you what a relief I felt after I made this decision. Sometimes I carry on doing things I feel I have to do when I really don't.

Bummer, because I really enjoyed Flickr Interestingness. It was reinstpiring a lot of creativity in me.

I really enjoyed using your module, but I can still understand your reasoning for letting it go. When we try to carry everything, we just end up dropping everything...
:)

Hi Blake,
The end of an era for sure. I only found one other Interestingness module (the only Flickr content that interests me), and it warned me that the module could give the module's author access to my Google cookies! Can you help with these two questions:
1) Is this a big deal.. technically, my cookies could fall into the wrong hands and be used to access my account?
2) Did your Interestingness module do this as well, and thus maybe this is normal and his module is the one that warns you about it?
Thanks,
Andrew

Its a shame. This flicker module has been going on strong on my page.
I'll never forget the day i saw the picture of a random old fat gentleman stuffing dollars bills down the pants of a male stripper. He had a look of nervous excited, but you could tell he was content. Thanks man.
Good luck with your other modules!

Sorry you're stopping this. Thanks for a great module - happy hacking.

Thanks for a nice module. It was fun seeing a picture from flickr Interestingness whenenver starting the day etc.
But I totally understand that you can't do everything. It's better to do a few things well, than to get burned out trying to do everything.

loser.

I still commend you for making the effort, it was one of the better modules but we've to move forward, good luck with your next project.

My favorite module. I'm going to miss it. Thank you for pointing the way to other ones and best of look with your new work!

I'll miss the flickr modules- but I understand your decision all too well! Best of luck and thanks.

Thanks for the module, I have really enjoyed using it. It was thoughtful of you to provide links to other similar modules. Good luck in the future.

I'm sure gonna miss those flickr modules...far and away the best ones out there.
Good luck with your other projects.

Like the other commentors I liked your Flickr Interestingness module. I think it helped me be a little more creative to look at a nice picture. Good luck on your other projects and thanks for the pointers to similar modules.

Its sad that ur not going to support the module anymore. I used to start my day at work by logging into Google and checking out a few Flickr shots through it n also when I wanted to take a break from the stress of medical transcription for a while. I wish the best for you.

Sorry to see the module go and would like to thank you for having provided it. Good luck with future endevours and congratulations for having the courage to let go. I also tend to hold on for long too so can appreciate your predicament :) All the best.

Ahhh.. shame, but I know where you are coming from...
It was a great plug-in - my favourite of the flickr plug-ins. Thanks for the time that we've been able to use it.

OH wow. I didn't realise the module wasn't provided from Flickr. This was my fundamental reason to start using Google's personalised website. I absolutely loved getting my random picture. Each one was a reminder that we're a lot of people in this world and this is what EACH photographer brought to show us. I often sat for 5 minutes clicking to get a new one! I am feeling so sad now /cry. Shouldn't we petition Flickr to support the module? Make sure the code doesn't get lost but give it to an Opensource website or something? I'd take it but I don't know the first thing about web programming.

How about giving the source to someone else to maintain? This really is the only Flickr module of any worth out there, and it would be a real shame to let it go. I'd be more than happy to take it over if it means keeping it going.

Shame - enjoyed using it on my homepage. Thanks for your effort and best of luck with your other efforts. Cheers - Chris.

Yes, thank you very much for doing it!

Just wanted to thank you for supporting it as long as you did! It has been a wonderful splash of color on my google home page for several months now.

That sucks. Thanks for the support and hard work. Good times.
Posted by: Kent | August 21, 2006 09:23 AM
i don't get it, couldn't you still keep it running (or does that mean YOU are hosting it and paying for it?) and just say that "there will be no updates, no support, etc." it is an "as-is" project. N-ways this would have seemed better. a) you can let go, b) people can still use it. there is a c) show us how to host it. bottom line: you need to do what you need to do! Good luck and thnaks for the FREE service you provided.

I was paying to keep it running, but that wasn't the biggest part of my decision. The biggest part was time.
I received about 20 emails per day for support questions, complaints and feature requests. In addition, the Flickr API changed at least once while I was developing the control.
In the end it was becoming more time intensive than I could manage.

Dang it, I came rushing here expecting to read some juicy tidbit about Google or Flickr! While your reason for discontinuing isn't as scandalous as I had hoped, it is a viable one. From the comments here it sounds like it was a good module and will be missed. Any chance you could pass it on to someone else who is interested in maintaining it?
Posted by: Jacqui | September 4, 2006 02:38 PM
Heh, heh.......I just noticed the part about how you put the modules into the public domain. Good work! Now it's up to us. (Well, not me personally, because I am barely computer literate)
