Your Phone
A few questions about you and your phone:
- Do you use your phone for texting?
- Have you ever used the web browser on your phone?
- Have you ever paid for a ringtone?
- Have you ever paid to download anything (ringtone, background image, game)?
But ... I'm a computer nerd. You'd think that I would be more capable of understanding the new phone technologies. I've received text messages (via email) on my phone, and I've sent one or two, but it was so painful to enter the email address alone that I've never really taken that seriously. I can't get over the price hump to actually pay for a ringtone or a game yet. Yeah, I know it's only a buck or two, but it's really not worth it for me just to have "Ice, Ice Baby" beg me to answer each incoming call.
I don't get it. Is it just that I'm too old?

before i had a treo, i'd answer no to all of the above. now that i have it, i text some, have browsed online (slow), but never downloaded junk. i did buy a ringtone a long time ago but don't use it. it was too quiet of a tone.

I remember the days of VCRs costing so much you could only afford to rent them... Wasn't too long ago, was it? I even remember when we had, what, at the most 10 television channels? Now how many are there!?!?!
My answers ;-)
1. The only time I specifically texted someone was when the Olympic torch was going through Sandy, UT, in 2002 and my husband's phone (and all Sandy City employees' phones) crashed--leaving the text messaging feature the only thing to work. My teenager texts all the time (to me, to his friends, etc...) I personally don't understand the excitement/purpose of text messaging except for maybe like my experience way back when... My hands hurt too... Too time consuming for me.
2. I used the web browser when I had AT&T Wireless because I had a set amount/time limit in my plan. I don't use it now because I'd have to pay extra for it. If I didn't have to pay extra, yah, sure, I'd probably use it... (I get anxious waiting for the next chapter of your blook to be uploaded!)
3. Yep. The theme from "JAG" a couple times on my AT&T phone.
4. The ringtone and a Snoopy background image.
I don't think WE are too old... Well, maybe for some things; but I used to dream of having a phone that I could take/use everywhere that was just mine... Less than twenty years later, I had one... Could even surf the web on it...
Isn't technology absolutely AMAZING!?!?

I have a Treo 650, so I use it heavily for email for business purposes.
1. Do you use your phone for texting?
--No.
2. Have you ever used the web browser on your phone?
--Yes.
3. Have you ever paid for a ringtone?
--No. I use the vibrate/silent mode all the time. I know how annoying it is to hear other people's phones ringing out in public, so I try not to contribute to the annoyance.
4. Have you ever paid to download anything (ringtone, background image, game)?
-- No. I'm too cheap to do that.

The only thing I've downloaded is my alma mater's logo *.
* That way, the person that steals my phone knows where I earned my BSEE! :)

1. I've never sent a text message, but I find it convenient to be able to receive them (for free) from my MSN Messenger contacts.
2. I tried the browser a few times in the first month, and ended up getting billed something like $20 in bandwidth. That was the end of that experiment. Seriously, what the hell.
3. My particular phone (the Moto V220) actually has a standard USB interface on it. I can chop out my own ringtones and download them myself, and it doesn't cost a dime. Granted, I use vibrate 99% of the time, but who else can say they have the Firefly theme song on their phone? (Other favourites include Wally Pleasant's "The Cat Came Back" and Carly Simon's "Nobody Does it Better")
4. No.

Speaking of ringtones. I will buy one, and only one, but I can't find it. With the traffic you get here, perhaps someone can tell me where to get it.
I want the guy who yells GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!
You know the one, it lasts about 1 minute.
With the World Cup in full steam, I recommend watching it on a network that broadcasts in Spanish. The games are much more exciting and when a goal is scored....
So, where can I get that for a ringtone?

Up until a few years ago, I was way behind on the technology curve. I worked with computers and developed government websites, but cell phones and such were beyond me and I never saw the need for them.
Now, I couldn't live without mine. I'm a slave to technology and hate myself for it. :)
But to answer the questions:
1) Yes, in fact I probably text too much
2) I do not use the web on my phone much now, but in the beginning, I did quite a bit.
3)Yes. I must have my 80s hairband ringtones. Life would not be the same without hearing "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister when my wife calls me. :)
4) Yes, but I use a 3rd party site and pay a flat fee for a years worth of downloads.
Yes, I need to be put down like a rabid dog. Not a day goes by that I don't read cell phone reviews in search of my next phone which will have more bells and whistles than most peoples PCs have.
