Eventually It All Comes Back to Star Trek

There are some who may argue that my obsession with Star Trek is unhealthy, but those people obviously don't understand tribbles, the horta or any aspect of a dilithium matrix -- which, if they did, would explain nearly everything.

Today's big news is transparent aluminum. Now of course it's not called transparent aluminum according to the article, but everyone who knows anything about Star Trek knows that it's the same thing.

So the challenge questions for the day are:

  1. Which Star Trek movie discusses transparent aluminum?
  2. Why does the Enterprise crew need the transparent aluminum?
The person providing the best answers to the above questions will have the distinct honor of being celebrated on this blog!

I will answer the questions in reverse order.
2. They need the transparent aluminum to wrap up their lunch. That way they can tell the sandwiches apart.
1. It is discussed in the episode in which Captain what's.his.bucket accidentally takes a bite of Chewbacca's peanut butter sandwich because it was wrapped in traditional foil. The captain, of course, was hospitalized with an anaphylactic reaction due to his severe allergy to peanuts.
Thus, the discussion of transparent aluminum foil.

I think Ryan should win because his answers are much more interesting than the actual ones of creating a holding cell for the whales in Star Trek The Final Frontier (I think that's the one). All I know is that it had the old Captain -Kirk - Ug. I pretty much don't care for anything before Picard. :o)

Hugs,
Holly

A holding cell for whales...priceless. Nice try Holly. What was it, a floating zoo like structure with visitors. If that is the true answer, which it is obviously not, why did it have to be transparent? Did they somehow forget they could see down inside a giant non-transparent holding cell? Because, hey it's water. And I highly doubt that they were offering tours to paying visitors. So that is another strike against a transparent holding cell.
I stand firmly by my answer, except it may not have been Chewbacca, it might have been Buck Rogers.

Now, how can one possibly argue against such logic? Wonder why they never did write in a space ship zoo scene in any of the series/movies? They could have had some interesting specimens - oh wait, that's what the alien races were for, silly me. I declare Ryan the victor.

On a side note, I find it interesting to know what Blake is actually doing during the day (I've always wondered - LOL.) How do you find these priceless tidbits of information? No wonder you're so good at finding stuff online. . . .lot's of practice. *wink*

Toodles,
Holly

Guess what? It did make sense for them to use transparent aluminum... it is much lighter and stronger than glass. Apparently the Al alloy is stronger than aluminum, istelf -- a good thing for shaving a few hundred pounds of weight off a spaceship holding many 100s of tons of water and whales.

"aluminum oxynitride -- ALON (tm) -- is a ceramic compound with a high compressive strength and durability. When polished, it is ... transparent", said. 1st Lt. Joseph La Monica. "The substance itself is light years ahead of glass" he said.
